.

Of the four basic types of biological responses to overwhelming obstacles standing between us and our goals, only one is a healthy, long-term, win-win approach to problem solving. And while we humans generally are capable of all four of these responses, we each have a genetic inclination to one or the other of these approaches. Unfortunately, in our current design of society, the types of human who are naturally inclined to be the most effective at leading us to where we most want to go, as a whole, are not at all the types who are currently being given the job, or even being promoted as candidates.

There’s a clear reason that there is such vocal distress when it comes to elections, as well as the decisions being made by large corporations and other institutions: the people who we really want leading us are being kept far away from those leadership roles.

So, in this episode, I go into a fair bit of detail about the four types of approaches to problems, and where they are most useful. And then I explore the kinds of individuals who we will want to actively seek out to give the most crucial ambassadorial and policy-making jobs that direct us forward, towards a world where we are all able to thrive, in whatever way is most meaningful to us as unique individuals.

This is my longest podcast episode yet, and well worth the time put into it for those who are looking for ways to uncover truly excellent solutions to our planet’s grandest challenges, and most difficult problems. The solutions are indeed out there, hovering on the leading edge of the overly negative social system of our past.

The secret is in unleashing those visionaries and innovators who are otherwise ignored, and pushed out of mainstream politics and science, because they are too “weird” to fit in. These “weirdos” are, in fact, the only ones who are likely to give us the answers we seek. They are the ones who will both care about us individuals, intimately, and be dogged in finding practical policies that will serve us all, collectively, and do so in ways we might never have even dreamed possible.

I encourage everyone who seriously wants our world to find answers — to questions such as how to support a resilient environment in the face of global climate change, how to help humans and other Earthlings adapt to rapid technological change, and how to alleviate the deadly conflicts between tribal-style groups in the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and on urban streets in the US and Europe — to intentionally seek out the “weirdo” hidden gems of problem solvers who haven’t yet been given the jobs that they are best at, and then, finally, give them the power, and other resources they need, to fully let loose with what some might imagine to be magic — the true magic that only comes from the purest physical determination, deepest emotional communication, and broadest intellectual innovation, all combined with the grandest cultural inspiration.

Or, How to Raise a Superhero, Not a Supervillan! Whether you are a mom or a dad, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, teacher, or any other individual in that proverbial village where a child is raised, I offer a short (relatively!) “everything you need to know” overview of what it takes to nurture a child of any sort of intelligence to be successful in all the most important ways.

This episode is dedicated to Sue Klebold, who’s been on my mind, and in my heart, quite a bit lately.

I offer you three points for each of the basic elements of your approach, starting with creating and sharing your clear intention to raise this child to get to the end of their life having generally felt like they lived in an environment that supported them being able to discover, and invest their lives in, their greatest dreams for what they most want to explore and create in and for their world. Then I go on to give the three basic processes for how to achieve this goal as effectively as possible.

Basically, it boils down to taking good care of oneself, then focusing on identifying and providing a broad range of options for this child to choose from that reflect the absolute highest quality physical, emotional, intellectual, and philosophical things that your world can offer them, and then giving them the respect and freedom to choose for themselves.

Good Luck!

Love is also the only way to grow, and find a better life, for oneself and one’s companions, whoever they happen to be, and while frustrating at times, is the only truly good option in life.

TWTS – Episode 30. – The Basic Stages of Artificial Intelligence We Should Aim For

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS The Basic Stages of Artificial Intelligence

.

I look forward to seeing an AI that is at least as intelligent as a 10 year old human! This is the level at which true intelligence shows up at the most basic understanding of conscious awareness, so it’s the most useful for us to create. These levels can be clearly defined using increasing awareness of different individual perspectives/goals in different combinations of observation and action (input/cause and output/effect) to the point of objective, third person, action that includes the goals of others, in the same way that a 10 year old human does: effectively, given some healthy philosophical/moral guidance and parameters.

The questions each of the higher functioning 4 levels/algorithms we need, beyond the core programming of the AI’s own goals and awareness of itself, are (note: these numbers are binary!):

10. What do you (person #2) want to do, and how does it affect me (person #1)?

11. What can we (person #2 and person #1) do together?

100. How are they (person #3) helping you (person #2)? (As perceived by person #2.)

101. How can I (person #1) help you (person #2) the same way they (person #3) did?

This is a long one! But if you are interested in goals we want to use for building AI that functions successfully, then this is a very thought provoking episode, with a good background on human intellectual development.

Please let me know your questions! I really would love to help you understand these levels and why they are important! Comment here, email me, or talk to me on Reddit! (My email is TheWiseTurtle on gmail. My reddit page is listed in the links below.)

It’s where we’re instinctively going in life, after we take a bit of a detour with a bit of a silly game that got taken way too seriously.

I talk about why not using, ignoring, giving away, and otherwise simply NOT having money can be the most valuable option in life.

Imagine if we made breathing a seriously competitive game. Well, that’s essentially what we’ve done with most everything else we living things need to do in life. And we’re starting to realize that we’d rather just be free! To breathe, eat, drink, think, listen, talk, laugh, cry, yell, run, watch, wait, explore, and create.

Whether you are a STEM teacher, a parent, an organizational leader, or just someone who believes that the world would be better off if more people, human and otherwise, were able to think rationally and scientifically and logically when looking to solve problems, this podcast episode is for you!

We already know that the primary need for complex brains to function well is basic physical health (from high quality nutritious food, clean water, fresh air, comfortable warmth, inspiring light, and the freedom to express one’s excess matter and energy), but after that, or even occasionally without that (temporarily) we have a better chance of supporting people in looking at things from multiple points of view if we, ourselves, are looking at things from multiple points of view, including the various goals and ideals of our audience.

In other worse, for best results, we can use all four dimensions of awareness/pespective to speak to others in a way that values their own unique personal priorities (and abilities), the priorities of their closest companions, the priorities of their larger communities, and the ideologies that they believe are universal.

TWTS – Episode 26. – How Science Can Eliminate Terrorism

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS Terrorism Cure

.

What do cat videos, systems theory, Netwonian physics, and you and me have to do with decreasing extremist violence? A whole lot! I take a look at how science can help us solve our problems with terrorism and other extremist violence, in all areas of our world.

We consider how change spreads from a single individual outward to the whole world via a messy web of more intimate, personal connections involving the sharing of our best, healthiest, most considered ideas.

And we combine that with the understanding that even with complex living beings, the instinctive reaction to an action is an equal one aimed in the opposite direction. This means that a negative/pushing/destructive force will naturally be met, most often, with an equally negative/pushing/destructive force aimed at the original source. This also means that a positive/pulling/constructive force will most often be met with a similarly positive/pulling/constructive force in return. So, if we have a goal of a healthy world, where even very diverse groups can “get along” and at least minimally tolerate one another fairly respectfully, then we should direct our efforts to creating an extremely attractive force at those who have been extremely repellent.

Making ourselves more attractive involves being curious, generous, compassionate, and loving. When we honestly welcome our “enemies'” thoughts and feelings about what they want to accomplish in life and what they believe they need to be able to achieve their dreams, and then seek to help them get these healthy things, we suddenly become exceptionally alluring and personally magnetic, allowing us to lead folks to a better place, where everyone can focus on improving the world.

And, yes, there’re also cats!

Life is defined here as:

A system (an organism, biological or not) that is mostly contained and that

3. outputs copies of at least parts of the newly created patterns (procreation)

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS Non-Murderous Self Driving Cars

.

In response to an article at MIT’s Technology Review magazine that offered the attention-grabbing headline “Why Self Driving Cars Must Be Programmed To Kill”, I feel the need to offer two very crucial points to the discussion:

1. BATNA: The “best alternative to the negotiated agreement” in the operation of a vehicle is to stay centered around a point of health and wellness. All users — be they animal, vegetable, mineral, or otherwise — of a shared space need to direct their actions in such a way as to NOT take chances with anyone’s life, right from the start. The number one rule of sharing spaces with others is to always plan to be able to stop, safely, if something unexpected happens. No plan is ever perfect, but starting out with at least a minimal threshold of something like “Stay safe enough that if there is a physical conflict any potential damage will be fixable”. High risk is only for consensual and limited play, NOT our planet’s basic organism’s infrastructure. Use a truly healthy model for our future systems, not the sick, bad habits of our past or present. In professional conflict resolution and mediation, one of the basic concepts is to always keep in mind that if negotiations are too challenging, one can stop and walk away with nothing worse than the status quo. In other words, no progress is better than making things much worse.

2. Intelligence Increases Options: In a complex system, the ideal plan is NOT a deterministic, direct path from point A to point B, instead the idea plan is an expansive, branching (US American) football-shaped web of as many possible routes to get from here to there as possible, both physically and logistically. A cut-off point that allows for as much wiggle room as possible while still making progress needs to exist before anyone moves forward with sharing the public ways, if we want to have a positive experience as we travel around our world and beyond. Not only do we need wiggle room for other individuals, including inanimate objects, weather, and malfunctioning thingies doing unexpected things, but we also have to include space for confusion and illusion. Senses, and sensors, can be fooled! Making sure that there are as many possible ways out of a potential conflict is the only way to allow for all the possible problems that could happen to happen with as minimal an impact on the goals of everyone sharing the space as possible.

This is just my first reactions, and I could go into far more detail, if anyone wants me to! I just wanted to make it clear that we absolutely do NOT want to program cars to kill, and instead can easily program them to operate in a safe and healthy way?

What really matters?

If the two processes of the universe are contraction and expansion, and all smaller “things” that make up the universe are different combinations of infinitesimal instances of the contraction and expansion states, then we can describe all of the things we speak of in these terms of contraction (0) and expansion (1).  In this case, I’m also going to suggest that the term “consciousness” can be described as expanded external reality being contracted into a more material state within an internal somethingorother (like our brains, or even a molecule).  In other words, all individual things that take in energy (information) from outside themselves and turn that energy into matter are “conscious” in some way.  And the more complex and multi-dimensional the representation gets, the more consciousness the thing has.  Human brains, of course, are pretty complex.  But is there something beyond this complexity?  Is a whole planet able to be conscious, if it is turning energy into matter in some way?

What matters?

Our more “metaphorical” and poetic language turns out to be an excellent clue as to the more scientific processes of what’s going on unconsciously with our more complex and interesting experiences as living beings in this universe. For example, the idea of “peak experiences” may well be a quite literal expression of how smaller, weirder waves of sensory inputs or communication outputs are overlapping in a way that produces an exponentially stronger and more powerful and more pointed wave in the story that is our life, in the same way that an expanded rainbow of colored light combines together to create an intense, focused burst of pure white light.

Sometimes, just sometimes, in our path through the universe, our bodies and minds come upon some collection of smaller, seemingly insignificant, or at least fairly mundane, elements of delight that are brought together in a way that overlaps their energy/information waves such that they produce an exceptionally overwhelming surge of power inside us.

I’m curious about how our more two dimensional science can bring it’s more quantified and detailed understanding of this process with philosophy’s (religion’s) more three dimensional illustrations of the big ideas of humanity, to help us better clarify how we might learn to explain and create more of our flow states so that we can help all of living beings, individually and as a whole, consciously find a whole lot more intense height and delightful breadth.

All intelligent beings are pattern seekers, and since all possible combinations of patterns seem to be tried by the laws of nature, whatever pattern we decide to look for in our reality we will be able to find more often than we would if we weren’t looking to find it! That’s not just because all possible patterns are tried in reality, but also because patterns are fractal, and so if we start looking for a simple pattern, we’ll start recognizing it in all sorts of other patterns, both simple and complex, as we move our focus closer or further away.

So… consider what would you like to see more of in your life, then start consciously seeking it out, using the most appropriate measuring tools and tactics to find such a thing, and you’ll likely find more of it, naturally.

(For more about why it’s likely that all possible patterns get tried, see the previous two podcast episodes on Entropy, Randomness, Evolution, Free Will, Determinism, and What Life is All About (Pascal’s Triangle))

Next time you wonder why something happened, consider that if the universe is purely random, in the mathematical sense, in which us limited beings only experience a small part, then why something happened is simply because it was possible. Everything that possibly can happen does, so everything that does happen does so because it could.

Ultimately there is no more accurate and scientific answer to the question of “Why?” than “Because.” Though that answer might not win you any accolades, and I suggest another option or two if you find yourself feeling the need to keep it simple, but others want more complexity!

Micro-governments are going to expand and take over most of the organization of resource generation, allocation, storage, and recycling for most of us humans on Earth, and they are going to do so in a positive, non-forceful, and simultaneous way, while the most wasteful and anti-social parts of the unwieldy centralized dinosaur governments mostly die off, leaving just the more contracted, sustainable elements of the large system that are the global infrastructures that we pretty much all agree are useful: a global transportation/shipping system and a global communication system.

What happens when we decide to start all the players in the global Monopoly game off with at least a minimum number of points each month? And how can we make this little game changing rule work fairly effectively, so that we don’t waste too much time getting it up and running as we test it out on a large scale? I suggest two points to pay attention to: removing the motivation to hoard, and identifying unique individuals in some highly verifiable way.

The simple campaign to write in “Everyone” on the ballot, when it comes time to elect a politician, is a movement to create a better system that combines the more comfortable form of government that we call democracy (where every individual gets to vote for what they want in a government) with a more respectful and welcoming form of government where smaller, fuzzier, more localized groups are allowed to freely choose how they want to run things, independendly. Having a decentralized, bottom-up, non-authoritarian government where people are free to move from places with average or even bad laws and policies to places with better or even awesome laws or policies will give everyone a chance to take charge of their own lives far more enjoyably. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s better than the current highly centralized, top-down, (winner take all) authoritarian option where we essentially are all forced into mediocrity, and exceptional progress is quite literally illegal.

If reality is random (in the sense of everything that can possibly happen does, just not linearly!) then we can eliminate at least some of the stress that comes from unpredictable things happening by both actively looking out for weird stuff, and also expanding our range of alternatives that we’re comfortable with, so that we can be better prepared for problems that pop up. So expecte the unexpected, and try to collect a “magic bag of tricks” to use when the regular old muggle tactics don’t work.

TWTS – Episode 7. Measure Twice Marry Once – How to Consciously Plan for an Awesome Life Partnership

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS Measure Twice Marry Once

Picking a Partner: Similar physical and emotional personality styles makes couples feel more comfortable, understood, and free to be themselves, so if you want a strong connection with your mate, seek out a partner with the same first person and second person styles. And the in the higher level preferences (intellectual/third-person and philosophical/fourth-person) seek out a partner with one similar and one different preference, and you’ve probably got a potential soul mate.

Connecting with a Partner: Communication really is the boring sounding, but highly challenging and rewarding, secret to any good relationship. Identify and share all of your most important frustrations, fears/losses, physical and emotional states, awareness, needs, and dreams with your potential or actual partner, and ask them to share their own in return, so that you have a more robust sense of who you are as individuals.

Growing with a Partner: Explore and understand the different levels of brain development that are happening and are expected to happen, because some of the changes that our minds go through at certain points of our lives can throw huge wads of weirdness into even the most stable partnership. Respecting and expecting these changes goes a very long way towards being well prepared to get through them not just intact but maybe even enchantingly empowered, as a couple.

Procreating with a Partner: The highest purpose of all constructive couplings is to allow two unique individuals, each with their own exceptional combination of particular bits of nature and nurture, to combine significant parts of themselves together to form something never before seen, to offer as a gift to the world at large, in the form of a physical, emotional, intellectual, and/or philosophical creation, all new and shiny and original. Identifying your shared goals for the type of remarkable being you most want to create as a couple, and clarifying how you most want to nurture that creation, so that it can most effectively interact with the world, is likely to be the super duper über glue that bonds your marriage together for life, no matter what insanity might get thrown at the partnership, because the desire for successful procreation, in whatever form feels most right to each individual, is the fountain from which living beings’ greatest strength, deepest passion, clearest thinking, and most inspiring wisdom in life emanates.

.

In this second (and extra long!) part I relate the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) categories/dimensions, and some of the mainstream Western psychology personality “disorders”, with my own four basic basic brain levels and preferences, described using binary numbers using contraction vs. expansion as the basic dimensions.

(Note, I believe that many of these so called “disorders” or “mental illnesses” are often perfectly normal and healthy diversities of brain type, so please don’t take these terms as is, and instead look at them as just one way to talk about our amazing brains and what they tend to be able to think and do! We’ve all got our own particular way of doing things that might be exactly what’s needed in a specific situation.)

First Person – Physical
Introvert/Depressive – xxx0 focuses on one’s own input/internal needs/state
Extrovert/Hyperactive – xxx1 focuses on one’s own output/external needs/state

Second Person – Emotional
Sensing/Avoidant Attachment – xx0x focuses on one’s companion/environment’s input/internal needs/state
iNtuiting/ADD – xx1x focuses on one’s companion/environment’s output/external needs/state

Third Person – Intellectual
Feeling – x0xx focuses on one’s community’s input/internal needs/state
Thinking – x1xx focuses on one’s community’s output/external needs/state

Third Person – Philosophical/Spiritual/Cultural
Judging – 0xxx focuses on the whole universe’s input/internal needs/state
Perceiving – 1xxx focuses on the whole universe’s output/external needs/state

IS: Depressive + Avoidant = Autism Spectrum
ES: Hyperactive + Avoidant = Histrionic
IN: Depressive + ADD = Borderline
EN: Hyperactive + ADD = ADHD

TWTS – 4D Personality (part 1)

TWTSicon

TWTS – Episode 3 – 4D Personality

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS 4D Personality

The four basic levels of human brain region/function, and their preference for focusing most intently on either the input/contraction/matter/internal/past-to-present needs or the output/expansion/energy/external/present-to-future needs at each perspective — first person, second person, third person, and fourth person — are one way to organize the different kinds of human personality.

First Person – Physical
xxx0 focuses on one’s own input/internal needs/state
xxx1 focuses on one’s own output/external needs/state

Second Person – Emotional
xx0x focuses on one’s companion/environment’s input/internal needs/state
xx1x focuses on one’s companion/environment’s output/external needs/state

Third Person – Intellectual
x0xx focuses on one’s community’s input/internal needs/state
x1xx focuses on one’s community’s output/external needs/state

Third Person – Philosophical/Spiritual/Cultural
0xxx focuses on the whole universe’s input/internal needs/state
1xxx focuses on the whole universe’s output/external needs/state

(So, for example, someone who is focused totally on the inputs/internal needs/state for all four levels of the brain function would be categorized as 0000, and someone who is focused on the outputs/external needs/state for all four levels would be called 1111. These numbers also correspond to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) letters/dimensions, which I’ll talk about for the second part of this podcast discussion, coming up next.)

Introducing a little experiment with audio…

The Wise Turtle Speaks podcast!

Little bits of creative, philosophical, political, educational musings from the corner of my brain that I call The Wise Turtle (it’s somewhere in the prefrontal cortex, I suspect) for your inspiration.  I’m going to roll this out slowly over the next few weeks, I think, with the goal of having a fully hosted podcast that you can subscribe to on the usual podcast aggregators and such.  For now, though, I’m going to test out a couple of mp3s here, and go from there.  If you listen to them and have any feedback of any sort, please let me know by contacting me at my email as TheWiseTurtle on gmail.  The first few recordings were done before I got a new computer and found my USB mic, so they aren’t as high quality as I’d like.  Later ones will be much improved, I hope!

OK, so without further ado, here’s the first test audio post!
