It’s time to listen to the world.

Telling our stories has never been more important, or easier! I’ve simplified the older Speaking Up process into four questions which naturally guide us through the stages of grief and learning, to help us clarify the most important experiences of our past, present, and future, so we can understand one another at our most human level. The more of these stories of loves, losses, dreams, and needs we hear from the world, the more informed we’ll all be about who we are and where we want to go, as a whole planet, full of Earthlings who are, simultaneously both very similar, and quite unique…

Loves – What are your most precious people and/or places that have helped you feel most alive?

Losses – How have those people and/or places not been able to get what they needed to flourish? And how have their struggles effected you, personally?

Dreams – Thinking about these precious people/places, what would you most love to create and/or explore as a way to honor them, or take excellent care of them, in some deeply meaningful way?

Needs – Which specific basic physical resources does your body require for you to be able to effectively work towards your dreams? (Human physical needs can be categorized as: regular access to nutritious food, clean water, fresh air, comfortable warmth, inspiring light, useful information, and outlets for expressing the body’s excess solids, liquids, gasses, and energy.)

.

Will you please share your story with me and the rest of the world?

The Big Picture:

We have land! Thanks to generous donations, my dream of starting a non-profit community resource hub with resident artists, techies, and educators all working with the community to find creative solutions using available resources to serve the needs of the community members freely and unconditionally so that everyone can be their best possible selves has real, material beginnings! We now have a (very cheap) small blop of property in mid-coast Maine, and I’m seeking folks who can help physically build spaces for volunteers to live, and the public to explore and create with us.

What is the core awareness of life? Pain and pleasure of the body. Repression or growth. Focus on the inputs and outputs from the organism, allowing everything outside the system to simply be complex neutral patterns in an ocean of waves of concentration and dissipation.

Letting go, temporarily, of the intellectual and emotional assessments of the patterns we see around us in the ocean that is our universe can help us reconnect to life itself, and listen carefully to our core awareness of how our current environment is taking care of our needs, to help us decide if we are healthy where we are, or if we need to move elsewhere to become healthier.

Social Media, and the internet itself, is about to evolve.

We can direct our communications in a simple decision tree based on evolution, with random mutation and natural selection helping us organize our content, effectively, efficiently, and responsibly, so that we serve our subjective priorities beautifully, for a more informed and inspired species.

I call this The Architecture for a New Internet. Bold, yet humble, is it not?

A tiny ball of confusion hits the Earth, pushing the status quo off the edge, dramatically eliminating the dinosaur memes, and allowing the small and furry memes of the Earth to reconnect with what it is that they most need, at the deepest core.

We now know what the memetic version of the genetic dinosaur’s infamous comet is. A tiny, spiky sphere of viral RNA.

Yes, the waiting is over. We are now leaping upwards, into humanity’s developmental level 1000, focusing on first, second, and third person input, with a whole new, planetary level output opening up to our awareness.

What do we need now?

Universal Material Health.

Starting at home.

And ever so slowly expanding outward, to encompass the entire globe.

Food, water, air, warmth, light, and information that is qualitatively better, for us all, so that we can mature into a global consciousness of peak self-awareness — an emergent wisdom of a new, all encompassing Age of Enlightenment.

.

We’re seeing history repeat itself, on a higher level now. We kinda know how the story of the dinosaurs’ genes went, and now we can see the dinosaur memes flame out too, to be recycled into informational fuel for the future.

While that happens, our small, furry, pro-social, creative memes need a place to hide out for a while. We can CREATE spaces for us to be safe, while we focus on taking excellent care of the basic needs of the small resourceful groups that are starting to spread out into the cracks and crevices of our planet, staying well away from the oversized, aggressive, dangerous beasts of centralized corporations and national governments.

You can join me in working to make truly safe spaces for all of our mammalian memes, and the bodies that contain them, or just go for it on your own, in your own local spaces.

It might not be the most comfortable time on the Earth right now, but if we focus on the best stuff, in small, decentralized ways, we just need to hang tight for a bit, and then we’ll finally inherit the Earth.

Happy Summer Solstice!

Love,
Turil

.

The title of this is a good old fashioned bait and switch, really. That’s because I want to talk about the question itself. I want to talk about these concepts of “right and wrong” and “true and false”.

These ideas are based in a limited, one dimensional, linear view of reality, which, while useful sometimes, is generally ineffective in the long term, and/or on large scales. To get a more effective view of reality, we can look at things from a higher dimension, with more complexity, seeing how reality is like a tree branching outwards in a fractal pattern. It’s not always easy! But it’s worth it if we want to find good solutions to our problems and gain more joy and meaning in life.

Ultimately, from the perspective of the center of the universe, “right” is just a subjective direction. All directions are “right” if every direction is available and interesting and moving reality forward, or “true”, just like every branch of a tree is the right branch.

So, whatever you do, and whomever you are, is what’s right, from the universe’s perspective.

TWTS – The Best… For What Purpose?

TWTSicon

TWTS – Episode 74 – The Best… For What Purpose?

DOWNLOAD (right click to save linked file): TWTS – Episode 74 – The Best… For What Purpose?

.

When we are asking for the “best” option or solution to a problem, it’s very useful to also be clear about:

Why are we asking the question? (Who, specifically, are we trying to help, and what are we specifically trying to help them get or do?)

How are the complex probabilities, and values of each option/solution, being simplified (to reach a single “best” answer)?

Bias, aka, subjective perspective, is a necessary part of a healthy, diverse system, but it can be problematic when we’re not aware of why individuals are coming up with dramatically different answers to what can seem, on the surface, like the exact same question.

For example, when asking an important question such as “Do we want to vaccinate ourselves and/or our children?” we can look at what our own, personal, goals are in life, what the options available to us are, how we give weight to the different possibilities, and what the probability is that the “best” choice is going to help us achieve our goals, relative to what the probabilities are that the other choices will get us to where we want to be.

And then we can seek to understand all of these things — goals, available options, and assessed probabilities — for everyone else who’s asking the same question and getting different answers, whether those others are animals, vegetables, or minerals even (computers, etc.).

Of course, understanding why their “weird” answers are the “best” from their perspective doesn’t mean that our own best answers aren’t the best for us. We might not need to change our own ideas about the best answers to our own problems when learning about others at all, since our own goals and options are probably different. But even so, getting to know a little more more about others’ thought processes is just a healthy way to feel more comfortable with the diversity of goals, and approaches to those goals, that life creates.

Or, we can skip the deep exploration of why and how, and just trust that life is doing what it needs to do, as we individually learn how to take excellent care of the specific people, places, and things that we find most precious.

Also, ultimately, we can become aware of the reality that life, as a whole, has to explore all the different options for all the different tactics, so that every time living organisms are thrust into new situations and new environments, there is someone, somewhere, capable of navigating through the new territory effectively, specifically because of their particularly abnormal modus operandi.

As strange as others’ answers might seem to us, and our answers might seem to them, all of our answers, and our thinking processes, are probably important for the success of life as a whole.

Future cities are places you really want to live at least some of the time. While also leaving some of the time, to go off on your own for a while. And then return to, to share and reconnect.

You only get fake answers when you ask fake questions. Fake answers are great when we are looking for some nice fiction, but when we want more honest, meaningful, personal, and important answers with which to make crucial decisions about the world, then we want the fake fake news, aka., the real news.

So how do we ask questions that lead to the best, more useful answers?

Ask everyone to Speak Up about the stuff that gets their blood flowing, so to speak.

Best Things (Loves): What most precious people, places, and things in the universe do you most value and want to take good care of?

Challenges (Losses): How have you struggled, or are struggling, with being able to protect the people, places, and things you love?

Purpose (Dreams): What do you most want to create and/or explore in this vast universe? (Eg., stuff for taking good care of physical bodies, for creating heathy living spaces, for building healthy communities on a larger scale, and for generating the most flourishing global culture possible.)

Needs (Hopes): What basic resources does your body most need in order to continue to work on your life’s purpose effectively? (In general: inputs of high quality food, water, air, warmth, light, information, and outlets for expressing the body’s excess solids, liquids, gases, and energy.)

Control versus freedom. Predictability versus unpredictability. Arbitrariness versus randomness.

Life is messy, and fluctuating, and we sometimes want to learn how to deal with the unknown better.

Here’s a bit of my story of how I learned to live with the chaos of a messy life.

I gave up thinking I could plan, and control, everything.

I understood that failure and sadness are a normal part of the learning/grieving process.

I learned to let go of my attachment to the details of what I loved and lost, while embracing the more important overall ideals and ideas of what I still want to get, so that I might find something similar but new that the universe might be happy to give me.

And I learned to see that the whole fluid movement of the interacting stories of all of our lives is beautiful on a large scale, even if the details of my own situations might be ugly sometimes.

Humans are extraordinarily majestic when it comes to the arts and sciences, and as we move into the future where technology — computers, AI (if we ever help truly intelligent synthetic beings evolve), robots, etc. — can take over the jobs that we humans find boring or dangerous in a bothersome way, humanity will become far more free to focus on exploring and creating new art and science.

So what is art? What is science?

Art is the emotional connection and communication with various media — the two-dimensional relationship between you and your medium, or you and your audience (via a medium/media). Art is the individual, subjective stories of what it’s like to be an individual relating to someone or something else in our big ol’ universe.

And science is taking two more more of those art stories and simplifying, analyzing, and comparing them to one another, collectively, to find the important similarities and differences so that we can generate a more broad, literally objective, view of reality.

art + art = science

art + art = science

Serotonin is the deep, philosophical, self-defining chemical that governs our most important connection with external reality.

Dopamine is the physical motivation chemical, but serotonin is the one that *inspires* you to become your best possible self, and find your place in the grand experience of the whole universe of space and time. When you are feeling at one with the universe, in pure euphoria, naturally, it’s because serotonin is letting you know that your patterns of biological input and output are literally synchronized with reality’s grand purpose.

A little wandering exploration of one of the most basic elements of the universe, the it-y “thingness” of each of the individual elements within reality, from atoms to alligators to Alisons.

These “its” are all about containment, stability, and separation/connection to the rest of existence.

And there are levels. The more boring things are pretty compact and stable. What is “you”, on the other hand, is much more fuzzy, with the center of you being the electromagnetic matter that forms your body, and the edges of you being the little bits of you that are more free flowing outward into the rest of the universe, only held moderately closely to your center through the gravity that holds humanity close to the Earth.

Is what you’re trying to do really important to you to do? But what you’re doing just isn’t working? Are all of your efforts being rejected by whomever you’re trying to help, yourself, your friend/family/companion, your community, your whole culture?

Look at offering help on a different level, then.

There are four basic levels of offering good things to reality:

Physical: first person offerings to the outside environment

Emotional: second person offerings to someone you are close to

Intellectual: third person offerings to the larger infrastructure of the system/group you are a part of

Philosophical: fourth person offerings to the whole world (and beyond)

If you’re failing to accomplish your goals of improving things on one level, try to do something useful at one of the other levels that will indirectly help things at the level you care about most.

I have a saying “Who haven’t you asked yet?” I guess it stemmed from my quest for answers about how to grow healthfully, and how to deal with anger, after realizing that both I and my beloved husband were so very angry. I found my best answers by looking in all kinds of weird places. Leaving no stone unturned, as they say. By listening to so many different types of individuals, instead of just the ones who were similar to me, I found some really unexpected perspectives which led to some great solutions.

We can form questions in different ways to get the attention of different kinds of individuals, who have different perspectives on the subject. These can be anything from different parts of our own brain to other animals, vegetables, minerals, and whatnot that we encounter in our lives — anything that happens to have some kind of information that we might not have, or haven’t yet tried to apply to our current problem we’re trying to solve.

Here are the kinds of questions that we can ask, in chronological order, as we seek to achieve a goal and encounter a problematic something or other (X):

Physical (Negative/Past): What caused X?

Emotional: What do others think of my theory about what caused X?

Intellectual: How does my theory fail to predict reality?

Philosophical: What IS reality (here and now)?

Physical (Positive/Future): How can we work WITH reality (to achieve our goal)?

.

What do they know?
Did you ask them?

(Oh, and inertia was the word I was looking for!)

Consider how the brain could function in a way that is pretty literally just recording the sensations that your body physically experiences (from the wavelength of light to the temperature and pressure of touch to the chemicals of smell) when you encounter some unique thing, by drawing little diagrams – like the letter “A” only way more complex and in 3D – in the brain using the neurons as endpoints and the axons and dendrites connecting them as the lines. When remembering something, we might literally just be replaying the physical experience in the body in some way, with full sensurround experience. (Just on a more subtle scale most of the time.)

And memories, ideas, language, etc. are fuzzy because the diagrams that get drawn with the biological stuff inside the brain are like waves describing probability, rather than simple, unchanging, written-in-stone “facts”. When I experience the color purple, most of the time it’s a pleasant experience, but occasionally it’s not, so the brain remembers those edge cases, as well as the more common ones, to use for future predictions about what might happen when those sensory experiences occur again.

TWTS – Episode 58 – Life is a Grand Experiment

.

Evolution, be it genetic or memetic or otherwise, is the process of taking two unique wholes, splitting them in half (or more, perhaps) and combining those halves with different halves, making entirely new wholes. The wholes go on to split up so that they, too, can expand out into the larger environment — from the tiny spaces inside a tidal pool, to a whole solar system, or any other scale of space that life exists within — and what happens on their unique journey, going their own separate ways and then re/connecting with all the other individual animals, vegetables, minerals, and such, as the whole system is explored, is recorded in the memories and general structure of the matter that makes us “individual things” up. And then the best, most interesting, most useful, most relevant, information forms one grand story of Everything That Is.

These stories — information packets in any form, genes, art, ideas, culture, etc. — of things that work best for nurturing all the individual things in the system, helping them function and grow and thrive, are shared as widely as possible, so that they can be used to make more, new, individuals/wholes, forever pairing with other parts never before combined. (And the least useful, interesting, helpful stories get forgotten, for the most part, except perhaps as examples of what not to do). The more that this process of taking the best parts of one individual person, place, or thing, and smooshing them together with the best parts of another individual person, place, or thing happens, the more effective, interesting, and delightful life gets overall, for both the individuals and the whole amazing system.

For the vast majority of us humans the state of flow is… over there. Just out of our immediate reach.

But if we stretch ourselves we can get there, get to a state where our bodies, including our brains, are operating at peak performance.

And to get there we need BOTH the support of healthy resources, and just a little bit of discomfort. Too much ease and comfort will make us bored. Too much pain and suffering and frustration will immobilize us (or turn us psychopathic). But that nice balance of everything we need most, plus a little challenge to give us a problem to focus our skills and experience on, will lead us to accomplishing something we likely never imagined possible. Some research suggests that the discomfort level is ideal when there is a positive (comfort) to negative (discomfort) experience ratio of 5:1.

One of the biggest places people get stuck when looking for enlightenment — be it in the more traditional Eastern philosophies or the more modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of mainstream Western psychology — is how to accept reality while also not “giving up” or being like a “doormat” and “letting people walk all over you”.

How do we “go with the flow” while not getting swept up in a seriously dangerous or excessively lame current? Why not fight against the way things are going, and try to go where we want to go in the first place?

The gist of it is that we find a way to aim, while using the flow to our advantage, to accomplish something meaningful. And the more open we are to all the different kinds of things that are meaningful to us, rather than trying to force a specific one, the more likely we will succeed.

If the universe (or multiverse, if you prefer) is indeed generating a pure mathematical randomness of all possible patterns (which physicists seem to think is very likely) – with entropy being the process of evolution where all the stuff that exists is continually being divided into smaller parts and recombined into new things – then we end up with a reality that grows infinitely more interesting, complex, challenging, fun, weird, and unpredictably beautiful with each passing moment. We’re not talking pure boring perfection of ectasy all the time, of course, but an ever increasing level of discovery of intersting and amusing and fun stuff.

This means that while it might seem that everything that possibly could be created, invented, explored, discovered, and known might already have been created, invented, explored, discovered, and known, in the next moment those things will fall apart and reorganize themselves into totally new things, being created, invented, explored, discovered, and known.

The universe’s story not only goes on, but the plot always thickens, the people (whatever type exists at the time) always get more character development, the settings always get more atmospheric, and the special effects always get more stunning.

The Solstice is a time of change, stopping what we’ve been doing for a bit and then redirecting ourselves. Tilting another way.

Using this as a signal to reconsider what questions and problems you have had in life, and revisiting the answers, or lack of answers, you’ve found so far, to see if there might be some new person, place, or thing that might offer you something new.

Who haven’t you asked yet?

Which animal, vegetable, and/or mineral might have some nugget of information that you never imagined even existed?

What if enlightenment was hiding under that rock over there?

This solstice, turn some things over, maybe, just to see what you might have been missing.

Ask someone you never thought of asking before. Ask them how you might be able to do something that you’ve always wanted to do, but had given up on hoping you could ever get to do.

You never know who might show up with something unimaginably valuable…

(NOTE: I am not so sure I had this generation and it’s personality type and contribution to society categorized well. See this post for a more detailed breakdown of the generations. I might have combined two different generations here.)

When the generation of humans born in the 2010s and 2020s come into power, our world is going to go through an almost unbelievably dramatic paradigm change, from one that is focused on making material things (animal/vegetable/mineral) using a top-down/centralized control of life to one that is focused on exploring and collecting the immaterial ideas/information/energy while using a bottom-up/decentralized control of life.

And it is the more Autism Spectrum types, or at least the personally avoidant/flight introvert types, who will be the ones to lead us (again, from below, not above, us), gently nudging us forward in all different directions as they focus on understanding how the whole universe wants to flow, and helping the world be more fluid and free, so that everyone can follow their own unique path through life. This will allow the whole system to turn into something almost magical, the way a drop of ink in clear water will swirl into chaotically stunning patterns…

The future will be one where there are infinite possibilities, and our wildest dreams of today might pale in comparison to even just every day life in a decade or two.

Nature knows how to make a beautiful life, we just need to go with the flow

Many times when I’m talking to people about the future, and the direction that I see things moving, based on the patterns of growth in life, they start to doubt me, and start looking to tell me all the reasons why the future is only going to get worse. Competition is “normal”. Humans are inherently messed up. Life is purposeless. Physics doesn’t care. We’re destroying the planet. Etc.

And, ironically, I both want to reassure them that they are mistaken, and let them know that whatever they feel is what they should feel.

Any time anyone, including yourself, tries to make you believe that what you are feeling is not what you’re supposed to be feeling, whether that is rage, avoidance, depression, or joy, you can be assured that they are confused. Feelings are the body’s way of sending you a message about the state of things, so that you can make a more informed decision about what to do.

Ideally, we can allow our emotions to be fully heard and respected and expressed before we try to solve any intellectually complex problem. This way we allow ourselves to focus on the past first, and then the future, using the parts of our brain that are best suited for each of these things.

We are given so many mixed messages about how to deal with emotions! Do X! Don’t do X!

I try to make the most of an hour to offer you a fairly concise and thorough, but simple and universal approach to expressing our emotions in a way that works well, and makes life easier for everyone, even when doing what we instinctively want to do hasn’t worked out so well in the past. I got into how we can respect and care for our bodies, and their natural, normal, generally healthy reactions to problems, fears, danger, threats, etc. while also doing as little harm to our environment and the individual animals, vegetables, minerals, etc. around us who we need to keep reasonably intact, if we are to be successful in growing and learning and making life better overall?

I go through the four basic instinctive reactions of fight/anger/aggression, flight/fear/avoidance, freeze/sadness/depression, flow/happiness/joy and how we can put a little effort into moving from the most destructive, and least effective, way of expressing our emotions, to the most creative and effective way.

The general idea is identifying the particular emotion and problem, and then practicing in a reasonably comfortable space with a similar low level problem to move just a little bit towards improving the situation in some way. Then, when the “real thing” shows up, you have more options, and can choose your instinctive response or your new skilled response, depending on which one is more useful.

.

Happiness seems like such an undefinable, inexplicable, unknown thing sometimes. We all know about the simple things that make all of us living things “feel good” that involve the body getting some sort of food, or water, or warmth which it needs to function well. But beyond that, why do some humans get all tingly when they hear someone whispering in their ear, and other humans don’t? And why is it so addictive for some people to gamble?

And why is life still worth living when there are so many depressing things out there?

Because life is, at it’s core, made to expand and grow. The algorithm of life is one for generating new life, and pretty much nothing else. Without that purpose in life, it would not continue to exist. And one way it does that is by having the super complex human brain reward itself for doing certain things.

What sort of things make YOU happy depend entirely on a complex combination of your genes and your environment, but the one thing that is always true, is that the things that make you happy, that aren’t actively harming anyone (non-consensually), are the things that the universe probably needs you to do more of.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thinking, mostly. Everything thinks. Therefore it is. What is thinking? Absorbing information/energy, and processing it in some way.

Thinking is patterns.

And there are only a few basic building blocks that make up, or at least describe, all possible patterns in reality: empty, pregnant space, a point or location in that space, a movement or line between two points, and so on, with each next pattern being more changes/lines between a point or set of points in space.

And Pascal’s triangle tells us how many points and lines (vectors, changes, differences, etc.) there are for each dimension of thinking that we’re doing.

(Note that I initially talk about the 1, 3, 3, 1 level of Pascal’s traingle as the 3rd/objective dimension, when it is the 2D/shape dimension, but I correct myself pretty quickly.)

.

The only law that always applies to reality is the laws of physics/nature, and that law is what we also call entropy/evolution, as far as I can tell.  This law essentially says that the universe starts with simple, boring, somewhat predictable stuff and grows increasingly more complex, diverse, weird, and unpredictable.  And it does so through a simple set of instructions for dividing things up and recombining them in novel ways to produce all possible combinations of matter and energy.

So the best way to stay as safe and uninjured in life as possible is to be expecting the (seemingly) unlikely to happen, at least somewhat often.

There are a variety of ways to do this, which I go over in this podcast, in a fairly meandering way. (Which is, of course, what you might be starting to expect!)

And as for me, I expect that you will be able to find yourself finding ways to embrace the weirdness in some weird and seemingly unpredictable way.

(Including, perhaps, noticing the reality that sometimes things are weird and sometimes they are wierd.)

The edges between the past and the future, the edges between what is and what isn’t, the edges between two different things, are where life, and all it’s diverse and expansive creativity, are born.

First we contract into ourselves, defining the edges of who we are and what we want, and then we can look around at our immediate environment to see what the edges are of what it is and what it wants, and then we can look for ways to recombine ourselves with our environment by dissolving the edges between us and our world in a way that is most useful for helping us create a better world.

So… I’d like to wish you a happy dissolving of the edge between 2016 and 2017!

For a century, we’ve been dwelling solidly in humanity’s stage of flight, as our basic reaction to global stress. But that’s coming to an end. The age of Extravert Sensing types being in the lead is starting to subside. And now, we’re entering the stage of flight. It’s time for the human world to be lead by the more Introvert Sensing types, who focus inwards in the more extreme ways, which will allow our world to move into some seriously quiet, reserved, and possibly magical, new-age, Buddhist, internally-focused navel gazing.

In a way, we’re all going to be refuges running away from the aggression and towards something unknown, with an open belief system, looking to discover what beauty and wonder the universe has to offer us all, from virtual reality, to cat memes, to deeply intimate but distant relationships, to quantum physics, and artificial intelligence.

Happy Winter Solstice!

I believe that we are well into a decade long turning point where we swing as far out towards the masculine, intellectual, 3D, objective, “Judging”, past-centered, bad-stuff-avoiding, artificial, controlling, technology based society as we can and then start changing direction, moving towards a more feminine, philosophical, 4D, universal, “Perceiving”, future-centered, good-stuff-creating, natural, spirituality based society where we focus our energies on helping the whole system flow as a unified organism.

Through the very personal, open, and honest stories we tell — of where we were, where we are now, and where we want to go — while using our greatest losses to understand what is most meaningful to us and how we want to honor our past while creating a better future — one that supports and inspires younger generations — a new culture is emerging. But it sometimes takes a while for that to be recognized, as large things such as whole planets take a while to pivot around the various corners of reality.

Much love and curiosity to you all this Solstice.

Enjoy!

This is a bit of a follow-up to a couple of previous episodes…

How does a bottom-up government, like the Life: Earth Mission (aka Prime Directive Earth) one I’ve been sharing, work? Whatever way works! Just like in a healthy living organism, like a human body, each local area, be it a collection of blood cells, a kidney, or a hand, makes it’s own decisions about how it wants to make decisions, based on who’s there, and whatever they find most comfortable for how they collaborate. And, while a bottom-up, living organism system is definitely no utopia (as we all know, when our bodies get sick or hurt or, eventually, die), the goal of a healthy organism is to try to give every individual within the system what it needs to function as well as possible, while being flexible and resilient through complex networks that can temporarily work around malfunctioning areas until they can heal and be put back online and working for the system again.

The more the individuals focus on taking care of themselves in their small communities, organs/organizations, using whatever skills, interests, resources, etc. they happen to have on hand, and the more these groups network together, based on both geography and category of purpose, the healthier and more effective the system as a whole becomes. The health of the system grows exponentially, meaning that we can repair a huge amount of damage pretty quickly as long as we focus on actually doing so, freely, and with a goal of system health, rather than competition.

When squeezed enough, everything explodes.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The more forcefully something is contracted, controlled, and contained, the more forcefully it will soon become expanded, uncontrolled, and uncontained.

But if there is an outlet, even just a single way to move into a lower pressure area, then the violence can be avoided.

And the more outlets for free movement, and free expression, the less violence there will be.

This is true whether we are talking about balloons or humans, physics or sociology.

Yet this seems to be one of most ignored laws of nature when it comes to leaders and policy-makers in the world, at all levels, and in all fields.

When norms, religions, governments, families, schools, organizations, and ideologies attempt to repress, by trying to contract, control, and contain an individual’s innate need for free expression, something always breaks. And the typical “solution” to that breakage? Add even more forceful repression, contraction, control, containment! More punitive, threatening, harm-based laws! More insults! More alienation of those who are outside the norm! In general, more lack of freedom all around. Ouch.

But we understand, deep down, through both our instincts and our science, that the only cure for violence, on all levels — physical, emotional, intellectual, and philosophical — is more freedom to be ourselves, our weird, abnormal, eccentric, creative, exploratory, awesome selves. More outlets for individuals to express their unique passions. More flexibility. More openness. More space for all the diverse individuals to be themselves, whether that is LGBT, Muslim, Christian, agnostic, weird-looking, normal-looking, Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, authoritarian, historian, singularitian, fat, skinny, blind, eagle-eyed, dark skinned, light skinned, female, male, mixed, genius, simple, New Aged, old aged, autistic, borderline, histrionic, hyperactive, shy, funny, dull, happy, sad, mad, mammalian, culicidian, ornithorhynchidian, Martian, or robotian. The universe makes all of us individuals to fill a niche, and as a society we can choose to try to block individuals from finding their niche, and suffer the backlash, or we can choose to help individuals find their niche, by giving them the freedom to fully, honestly, and openly express who they are and want to be.

The “safety” of forced contraction, control, and containment, which always eventually results in the serious danger of forced expansion, uncontrol, and uncontainment, is the opposite of what we need. What we truly need is freedom. Freedom to be human, or whatever else the universe has made us to be. Freedom to be and do whatever we feel most joyful, passionate, excited, and delighted about when it comes to what we want to explore and create in life.

So, I wonder, how can we turn the dialogue around to promoting freedom, rather than safety, flow, rather than boredom or overwhelm, in our world?

Maybe Blooomy.org?

A long and wonderfully winding tour of the past 60 years of humanity and how each human generation (of 20 year periods) has split off from and then recombined cultural norms and ideals from their elders and future Earthlings to elevate our species, and all of life on Earth, into thinking in three dimensions, at governmental level 111, and then, eventually, in all four, at government level 1000 and beyond, for some truly brilliant evolving. I had a whole lot of fun with this one, and I hope you find it fascinating to consider where we’ve been and where we seem to be going…

Here is the way I see Generations X, Y, and Z

Gen X – “The Slackers” – born 1950 to 1969 – First Person/Physical Output Focus
Question: What do I really want to do in life? What does it mean to be a human being and what are we “supposed” to do, if we want to be our best?
Answer: Stop being so greedy and violent, and instead connect to one another!
Peak Achievement (and gift to the next generation): the Internet
Some Spokesmodels: Robert Downey Jr., Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith

Gen Y – “The Circus Generation” – born 1970 to 1989 – Second Person/Emotional Output Focus
Question: What do we really want to do together? How can we be our best, interpersonally?
Answer: Stop being so focused on just yourself, and instead play games together!
Peak Achievement (and gift to the next generation): Social media/gaming to improve health
Some Spokesmodel/s: Jane McGonigal, Tim Ferriss, Mark Zuckerburg, Alexis Ohanian, Chris Poole

Gen Z – “Millennials”, “Generation 3D” – born 1990 to 2009 – Third Person/Intellectual Output Focus
Question: What do we really want to do for work? How do we want to collectively solve problems and improve the lot of us?
Answer: Stop being so focused on just you and your pals and competition, and instead start collaborating with all of the diverse Earthlings – animal, vegetable, mineral, and otherwise – in solving the problems of life on Earth in a fun and exciting way!
Peak Achievement (and gift to the next generation): Basic Income (and something involving “the Blockchain” and VR, probably)
Some Spokesmodel/s: (Ummmm… Errr…. Any suggestions for the best of the 26 and under set?)

And what’s next? What will those born starting this decade want to focus on? Everything “out there”, in the most mystical, and incomprehensible sense! They will start up the “Transhumanism” reality, I think. Looking to see what the universe beyond our planet and current material understanding of life has to offer us all. And then, those born even later will be the first generation of fully active Transhuman beings, in the sense of individuals having two or more fully functional bodies (“trans” meaning “across” or “beyond”): with avatars in VR alternate realities, in robot/drone bodies exploring the deep sea, as AI copies on spaceships, or whatever, that are connected to their “home bodies” in realtime, so that individuals can collaborate creatively with themselves over expanses of space and time (making them 5D beings?). Is that a bit scary to us older folks? Yep. And also exciting!

Enjoy!

A shockingly short and sweet reminder of what robots want. I thought I’d done a podcast about this already, but couldn’t find it, so maybe I imagined it, or it was hiding in the middle of some other, longer discussion that I’ve since forgotten about, so I felt it would be good to put this out there. This is pretty much all I think needs to be said on the matter of robots “stealing” your job!

When the outside world isn’t giving you great feedback, maybe it’s time to give you some for yourself. Here’re some practical suggestions for assessing the ideas that are floating into, out of, and around your own head, to see where they are useful and where they are not, and to flesh them out into more realistic curves, and spheres, and such, rather than just yes or no binary models of life.

TWTS – Reflecting on War = Raw

.

In this episode I explore how we can transform our history of war, the negativity surrounding Memorial Day (and it’s celebration of violence), and the anger/destruction/disconnection-based fight element of the stages of grief (stages of learning), into something positive so that we can evolve. Memorial day is all about reflection, and I discover that the literal reflection of “war” is “raw”.

Rawness is all about vulnerability, openness, existential philosophy, absolute sensitivity, and being in an unadulterated, natural state. War is the opposite of raw in the same way that the anger/fight element of the stages of grief is the opposite of the depression/freeze element. Depression comes after anger, and it is what finally moves us toward the discovery of an enlightened resolution to our past problems.

We can reclaim Memorial Day as a positive time to embrace the spiritually beautiful and raw depression stage of grieving, with its focus on looking back at the life-affirming things we have lost, and then keeping those in mind as we seek ways to reconnect to the world using healthy curiosity and compassion, especially with those we might have previously feared or been in conflict with.

Because our own perceptions of external reality are always colored by our own subjective experiences, goals, beliefs, etc., when it comes to the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, as well as identifying Artificial Intelligence, the question of whether or not we decide that some “other” is “intelligent” or was designed on “purpose”, may be moot. In any long sequence of ones and zeros we can always find some “interesting” pattern.

So I propose a slightly modified version of Alan Turing’s famous test which can be boiled down to asking:

Is this thing able to take in my goals and offer an unexpected and useful solution for achieving those goals?

The wider the variety of goals a thing can offer solutions for, and the more useful those solutions are, compared to one’s own solutions, the more “intelligent” we might want to label this thing, if that is the sort of thing we really want to spend our time doing, that is.

Enjoy!

.

There are so many myths and misconceptions about why someone would commit a hate crime or otherwise want to harm someone else, especially when it comes to things like identity (gender, culture, age, shape, size, lifestyle, beliefs, etc.). I offer a simple way to look at hate that allows us to see the heart of the problem, so that we might better address it, effectively and compassionately.

This episode was inspired by a BBC World Service radio show that talked about a man who took up boxing after being attacked after coming out of a gay bar, and a review of a documentary film about philosopher Hannah Arendt and her controversial ideas on Nazi hate crimes.

Economists, lawyers, investment experts, parents, teachers, the media, etc. are all unlikely to know how to truly use one’s material resources, especially $, £, ¥, €, Bitcoin, etc., to the fullest, since they have unlikely researched evolution and how it affects society and human technology. So, their advice, while potentially reasonable for the past, is probably nowhere near as important or useful to you as the advice I offer here in this short and sweet podcast episode.

If you have a goal of using your excess resources to generate a future where you and those you care about have the most access to the things they need, so that they can most freely pursue their dreams, then listen up!

Enjoy!
